Dates for your diary

The Balcombe French Association has some exciting events coming up this autumn which we think you will want to attend. So please put these in your diary:

  • 31 August - Bubbly Boules and Brunch
  • 11 September - first monthly meeting in the Half Moon
  • 9 October - monthly meeting in the Half Moon
  • 13 November - monthly meeting in the Half Moon
  • 15 November - French themed Barn Dance in the Victory Hall
  • 11 December - monthly meeting in the Half Moon

Our big news is that we're starting monthly member meetings where we can have a chance to chat and share experiences. Each meeting will focus on a specific topic with a speaker who will talk for 20 to 30 minutes on their chosen subject, followed by general discussion.

Alan Dearden will be our first speaker in September and will tell us about the architecture and wines of Alsace, an area of France for which he has a great respect and passion.

Sue Nimmy, who some of you will know, will talk at our second meeting, and our third will have a Beaujolias theme.

We do hope you will pop in and join us for what I know will be very interesting and enjoyable evenings. They will start from 7.30pm with the talk at 8.00pm. We even get to taste some Alsace wine on 11th September!
15th November sees the return of the very popular Buzznicks to provide the music for our Barn Dance in the Victory Hall. This will have a French theme as the band members also form part of Dansez Francais. As with all Barn Dances, no previous experience is necessary. This is an event for all the family with children welcome - they seem to have the most energy too!

And lastly, it's not too late to grab a ticket for the hog roast at our Bubbly Boules and Brunch event this Sunday 31st August.

We look forwards to seeing you all soon,

P.S. Don't forget picnic chairs and -tables or a rug on Sunday at the BBB.

Bubbly, Boules and Brunch 2014: Sunday 31st August

BFA's ever-popular Bubbly, Boules and Brunch event will be held on Sunday 31st August from 11.30 to 16.00 at Lodgelands, Crawley Lane, Balcombe.

And this time we doing a Hog Roast too!

Gillian Lindsay-Stewart has once again very generously offered us the use of her lovely garden, which, as you all agree, is a splendid venue for our main event of the year. If you haven't been before, it's an opportunity for us to get together, relax, have a leisurely brunch with a glass or two of bubbly and then take part in our eagerly awaited Boules competition.

This year we're providing a hog roast with plenty of salads and vegetarian options. So that's Sunday lunch sorted! A complimentary glass of fizz on arrival, and a pay bar with beers and French wine will be available.

Just like last year, we will run a knock-out Boules competition throughout the day, although to simplify things we will have teams of two. Children can either take some of your turns or make up their own teams. The more the merrier. If you want to know the rules, have a look at the rules here. As you know, it is a game for all ages with no previous experience required. We'll supply the Boules and we'll explain the Rules (they are simple, really) so all you have to do is turn up. You can even bring your own boules if you want to. And what's more, the winning team will receive the Jacquie Dickinson trophy plus a box of chocolates for the team to share. There will also be prizes for Second and Third places.

We will also have a raffle for a bottle of champagne and a hamper of French goodies.

The emphasis is on family fun and we will have a game of French Cricket for the youngsters as well as the Boules competition.  Plus you'll have another chance to Splat the Oeuf, which went down so well at the Village Fete (if you don't know, it's a game where we try to land a boules on an egg!). We might even have another go at the egg catching competition!

So we hope you will come prepared to have fun and to do battle for the prestigious trophy while enjoying a sumptuous brunch in the lovely setting of a fine Balcombe garden near you.

Tickets are only £10 for adults and £5 for children (family ticket £25) and are available from Threads. Children under 5 are free.

Please book your tickets soon to help with catering, or get in touch with a committee member. We look forward to seeing you all at Lodgelands, Crawley Lane (just follow the balloons)!

Remember to bring fold-up chairs and tables or a picnic rug if possible.
